Solar Cookers; Not Just For Camping

Solar cookers are gaining popularity and it's no longer just campers that are finding them to be an essential companion. So, why are so many choosing to get on board this very smart way of cooking?

First a brief history of solar energy.

It has been documented that as early as the fifth century ancient Greece utilized solar energy to heat their homes after a shortage of wood left their homes in a chili condition.  They did this by a strategic placement of windows.  This resulted in a warm house, even throughout the night.

Harnessing this natural resource couldn't be more ideal.

What are the benefits:

A healthier alternative.  Solar cooking retains foods nutrients because it is cooked at a lower temperature.

Environmentally friendly.  No electric, no gas or fire just the beautiful sun.

Food taste better.  Since I never tasted food prepared this way I am relying on research and testimonials.  Although this isn't surprising considering that the food would naturally retain its flavor and moisture.

Natural disasters and increment weather often leave folks without electricity.  Having a solar cooker in your arsenal of supplies is one way of ensuring your family continues to enjoy wholesome cooked meals.  This is actually what peaked my interest in this way of cooking.  I've experienced one to many outages this past year.

Benefiting developed countries

Many countries rely on fire for cooking.  This isn't an ideal situation considering the time and energy required to maintain a fire as well as the use of unsafe fuel.

The Hot Pot Solar Panel Cooker pictured above is what I consider to be a new and better crock pot.  What is so interesting about this cooker is that it can prepare a chicken (vegan using description for sake of demonstration) in two hours.  If you like flavorful soups, chili, stew, anything that you would normally prepare in a crock pot then this is definitely worth considering.  You can leave it all day while your a work with no worries.  My dad was an electrician and taught me never to leave a crock pot on all day because they can cause fires.    That's not of concern with the Hot Pot Solar Cooker, so you can leave food to cook without a worry.

A camper's companion

The beauty of using solar cooking while camping is its ease.  It takes less than thirty seconds to set up and does not require constant attention.  As you can see the Hot Pot is very portable, yet can prepare three quarts of food. It's easy. You put in the ingredients and ya leave it, when you're ready you can all enjoy a delicious meal.   A bonus: you can even make delectable, moist breads and cakes in the Hot Pot. It takes a little more skill, but it can be done.

Also perfect for a day at the beach.

Pealla prepared in the Hot Pot Solar Cooker

Because the Hot Pot is relatively small and compact cooker it's not ideal for the winter months for those of us living in the north.  For us Northerners the best time to use the Hot Pot is mid February through November due to the position of the sun in the winter. This shouldn't pose a problem for campers, cause who in their right mind is going camping in the winter.  Ugh the cold.

I love the solar option! This is a great option for developing countries. I was thinking about how handy it would be during a time like the tornado outbreak we had. We were without power for a few weeks... but for people that don't have power at all this could be a great alternative.

I was shocked to read that "the science of solar cooking is not that new - it was first attempted on a controlled scale in the mid 1700s by French-Swiss scientist, Horace de Saussure. His attempts were first reported in the first-published study of solar cooking in 1767." That's crazy, I'm going to "trivia" tackle my parents with this one.
